GMAT has evolved over the last few years into a truly 24×7 exam. Prior to the Covid pandemic, you were only allowed to take the GMAT at test centers and you chose your appointment based on the available slots. You could take the GMAT 365 days a year, but it wasn’t a truly 24×7 exam. With the introduction of GMAT Online, you can take the GMAT 365 days a year (366 days in a leap year!) 24X7. Therefore, GMAT exam dates are available at any time you want to take the test.
However, if you want to take the GMAT at a test center there are specific slots available at various test centers across and you can find the information on these slots in the next sections of this article. We will also tell you how to find a suitable GMAT exam date so that you have enough time to prepare for the GMAT and you don’t have to reschedule your GMAT exam appointment and pay a reschedule fee.
How to select a GMAT exam date
GMAT is an important part of your MBA application and therefore, scoring well on the GMAT is really important. It’s needless to say that you need adequate time to prepare for the GMAT to score well and that’s why selecting the correct GMAT exam date becomes all the more important. So, how do you choose a GMAT exam date? Go backward. Let’s look at the process and an example:
- Step 1 – Choose your target business schools and decide which MBA application round you want to apply in
- Step 2 – Select the earliest application deadline out of all the business schools’ deadlines available
- Step 3 – Keep 2-3 months for preparing essays, letters of recommendation, and other qualitative components of the MBA application
- Step 4 – Keep 1 month for preparing for a GMAT retake
- Step 5 – Keep 4-6 months for GMAT preparation
Let’s understand this process through an example.
- You are targeting 5 business schools and your target application round is Round 1 of 2023 admissions.
- The earliest deadline for these business schools is the first week of September, somewhere around 7 September 2023.
- You should start preparing essays and other application components by July 1, 2023.
- In case you need to retake the GMAT you should start preparing for it by June 1, 2023.
- Therefore, if you are planning to apply in Round 1 to your target business schools in 2023 your GMAT exam date should lie in the last week of May 2023 and you should start preparing for the GMAT by January 2023.

The GMAT exam is offered year-round at authorized test centers and at home via GMAT Online. You can check the availability of test dates and locations on the GMAT website.
You can schedule your GMAT exam online through the GMAT website. You will need to create a GMAT account and pay the exam fee to reserve your spot.
Yes, you can reschedule your GMAT exam for a different date or location if you need to. You can do this online through your GMAT account. You will be required to pay a rescheduling fee to change your exam date.
Yes, you can take the GMAT exam multiple times. However, you must wait at least 16 calendar days between each attempt. The GMAT exam can only be taken a maximum of 5 times in a rolling 12-month period and 8 times in a lifetime.
There is no specific deadline for scheduling your GMAT exam. However, it is recommended to schedule your exam at least 4-6 weeks in advance to ensure you can get a test date and location that works for you. This is especially important if you are planning to apply to business schools with deadlines in the near future.
On the day of the exam, you will need to bring a valid, government-issued ID (passport) and your GMAT Admission Ticket. You will also be required to provide your signature and photograph at the test center. It is recommended to arrive at the test center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time to allow for check-in and security procedures.
